This 4th valve in the serial valves. Shows very excessive wear. Hydraulic pressure is almost nonexistent inside the transmission. This is usually the case when somebody drives the vehicle until it doesn’t move anymore. Many other areas inside a transmission are severely damaged due to the heat generated from the failed components.

Many times valves like this are coming out of the transmissions that have around 160,000 miles on it. This particular valve you’re looking at had only 88,000 miles.

When we take a party transmission with this type of damage, you will be at the maximum repair price. On rare occasions it gets to a point the transmissions are not fixable. It is strongly suggested that you don’t let it get this worn down.

Looking at this 3rd valve in a series of valves. We find that the wear is starting to get a little more excessive. We are starting to experience a larger pressure loss in many aspects of the transmission. These systems inside are no longer working properly. Symptoms may include: The obvious shudder. Sometimes there will be flare shifts and hard down shifts. Various transmission operation failures. By this point, the internal damage of the transmission may be severe. We find that when a valve looks like this and we pull the pan before the repair, there is usually a fair amount of metal contamination on the magnet.

The second valve illustrates slight wear on the pressure regulator valve causing low line pressure. At this stage of the game, you’re starting to feel a shudder when applying. It may only happen when the vehicle is at operating temperature or in hot mode. The feeling of a washboard road will get worse as time goes on. It’s best not to let this go any longer.

          Let’s talk about GM truck 6 speeds. 6L80’s, 6L90’s

I’m going to touch base on the most common problem that I see with this transmission. It is a worn pressure regulator valve. This valves in the pump and the transmission needs to be removed for access.

The role of the pressure regulator valve is to regulate the hydraulic pressure overall inside of the transmission. There are many more valves that take this pressure and move it to certain areas. When the main valve fails or starts to fail, there becomes a lack of pressure that should be there. This will cause all sorts of problems. One of the most common problems is a torque converter clutch shudder. It feels like a washboard road while you’re driving down a dirt road. This can be very subtle at first, but gets to be quite violent as time goes on.

Catching this early can definitely determine the cost of the repair. If let go too long, there is a lot of internal damage that is expected to happen. One of the main items is the torque converter. Clutch fails due to lack of pressure applying the clutch. The pressure regulator valve is a main component of this process.

Also, the programming of the transmission computer has a factor in how long that clutch will last in a vehicle. To gain better fuel economy, the manufacturer will apply this clutch, sometimes as low as second gear. That can be a problem. More on that later.

The valve shown here is only slightly worn. The issue with this transmission was caught very early.

It is not uncommon for repair facilities, especially dealerships, to suggest replacing the transmission. Experiences. We have done more repairs on these than replacements.

10R80 clutch cylinder failure or known from Ford. “Hub”

This clutch cylinder will become severely worn from the clutch plates. These grooves will eventually wear through and cause a disconnection. Ford has redesigned this part with an anodized coating that is harder.

We have mostly seen where in these areas and not necessarily a broken housing. If the wear is significant enough, it should be replaced along with the other upgraded components. It should be noted that not every transmission needs to be overhauled. Many of these issues we see do not ‘cause major malfunctions and contamination inside the transmission. Many of these can be repaired instead of replaced or overhauled.

The next few blogs will have some insights on the Ford 10 Speed automatic transmission (10R80 & 10R140). This transmission is installed in many vehicles, from Ranger, F150’s, Expedition, Bronco, Mustang and Ford Super Duty trucks.

These transmissions have some design issues that have caused some serious problems. I’m going to touch on these in the next few blogs. The range of years from this transmission is from 2017 up to the mid 2020’s.

Some of the complaints have been erratic shifting. When this transmission shifts into 4th gear is the most common complaint that I have seen. This is caused by a C.D.F drum that has a part move inside of it and blocks a hole. This hole allows fluid to flow into the clutch assembly for that gear. When it is blocked, it has a very harsh and unstable shift.

Talk to us about how this can be repaired and the transmission does NOT need to be replaced.

Choices

We encourage you to have some phone conversations with an independent shop to see what makes you feel comfortable.

As a consumer of automotive repair, you have many choices of types of businesses to service your needs. I would like to introduce you to the independent repair shop. We are the shops where the people(s) that control the outcome of the repairs and the cost of those repairs are directly involved with those repairs. We do not have an owner that has several shops or an owner that is a franchise operation or a dealership that has to answer to the “higher up’s”.

          I call this dealership row

Independent shops may be a good answer for your needs if you want a repair or opinion on a repair that does not involve a bottom line of finances that fit the needs of the shop / dealer. For instance, your vehicle is at a repair facility or dealership, and you might feel uncomfortable or distrustful of that operation. It might be a good idea to get another opinion and/or an estimate. This is your choice! Sometimes a simple phone call me be a good idea.

Our goal is to gain the trust of every new and existing customer that we have. We understand that there is a plethora of independent and chain operation repair facilities to choose from.

These are the areas that we use for our inspections. These headings speak for themselves on what needs to be done for your vehicle. What we want to do is to make an honest inspection that shows the proper heading that fits the needs of the vehicle. Many places will mislabel the need for your vehicle into the improper category. This may instill fear in you, the customer. That may cause you to make a decision on your vehicle that may not necessarily need to be done at that time.

Some of you have already found an independent repair facility that is very reputable. Yes, they are out there! I am happy for you if that is the case. If not, we would like you to consider our shop or another independent for repairs on your vehicle. Keep in mind, the independent shops are not under “upper management” that have quotas like dealerships and “big box” repair facilities. For most repairs, independents are the better option.

Inspections

These inspections may point out critical areas that need attention right away and/or potential future items that need attention.

When you visit a dealership or automotive repair facility, do you get some type of inspection done? Many businesses utilize a digital inspection system. These are quite handy tools for us to let the customer know what issues they have with their vehicles. These inspections may point out critical areas that need attention right away and / or possibilities of future items that need attention. The problem is, sometimes the repair facility or dealership gets a little out of hand on its recommendations. The problem with that is you as the consumer will just disregard all information on that inspection report because it is “too much”.

My goal at my facility is to educate every customer that comes in what issues they have on their vehicle. In the end, it is always up to the vehicle’s owner to determine what they want done. Many times, there can be discussions about different types of parts or quality of parts to try to help pricing out to fit your needs. Let’s have that discussion!
